Piki Amoamo sent me these great photographs from years gone by.
Piki features in Ray Tinsley's Fiordland books that were a major source of inspiration for me & hunting mate Craig Burgess.

Thanks for sharing the photos Piki   Smiley

Out of interest, does anyone know who's the owner of the head in the 'Harrison Saddle' photo? Piki recalls the photo was taken when he was hunting with Ray Tinsley - they walked from the Glaisnock to Anchorage Cove and met this guy on the Harrison Saddle. His mate with him wrote a book on that hunt, but Piki can't recall his name

Cheers, great to see  Cool

The big Harrison Saddle head was shot by Jim Griffin, I think - it's not Jim in the pic but his mate Laurie (?). Jim wrote a book called "Stags Galore". Absolutely amazing head, and I think it was the only animal, or at least the only bull that they saw. Some time in the 80s too, when it must have been a freak of nature!

If it is the same head, it looks a lot better in that pic than the ones in the book.

Wow, you're right ... thanks Oscar!
I have that book but haven't picked it up for a couple of years now. You're right, it's the head shot by Xculler's mate Jim Griffin in 1986. Looks bigger in this pic as you say.

Held by his mate Laurie MacKay in this photo, who according to the story in the book had a couple of cracks at it moments before Jim shot it. 47 1/2" x 46" ... what a trophy. Quite a story too, including nerve-racking climb down bluffs with this head.

The story actually recalls the encounter with Ray & Piki, after Laurie stalked in to red roars they were letting out in a saddle below Jim/Laurie's campsite.

I wouldn't have guessed 47" from a glance at the book pics, so its great to see it in a pic like that. How incredible to pull out something like that at that time. And for it to be a classic Wap too Afro

Anyone know what it scored? (I guess that's the same Laurie Mackay in the latest Outdoors with a honking great Sika (203DS)?)

great pics, it would be great if we could get pics from years gone past for new hunters to see, a lot of good stuff never sees the light of day and could be lost to NZ
